Anyone who’s ever groaned at the imminence of Valentine’s Day should avoid China’s romantic spots like a pink and fluffy plague. It seems no scenic beauty goes overlooked, as flocks of bizzarely-clad couples buzz around beaches, parks and mountain viewpoints at the instruction of photographers and make-up painters.
Marriage, a symbol of everlasting love and unity, seem unnecessary when you can have the photo without all the ceremonial fuss. What’s important is not integrity and faith, but rather lacey little ribbons and bunches of bright balloons.
Part of me worries that such grossly impersonal commercialism of love will begin to ruin China’s romantic future, not to mention its most beautiful landscapes. But a larger part of me sees, points and laughs hysterically, especially at the universally-unwilling grooms.
