There’s really no point reinventing the wheel.
Whilst top, seriously talented graphic designers can of course conceive entirely new concepts that achieve both artistic brilliance and functional clarity… most of us simply can’t!
So instead, I for one start most design projects with a big old review of others’ designs, invariably taking some pretty close inspiration, if not a full template.
There’s still creativity in the execution, and even in the choice. But essentially yes, I’m copying.
I’m definitely not the only one though – you can see familiar design layouts and elements across print and digital channels. It can feel like we’re all very much on the same page.
There’s an advantage, though. When so much is familiar to audiences, the MESSAGE of your work can really make the impact, with minimal distraction.
