WHAT ARE ‘PHOTO TEXTURE COLLAGES’?
Essentially, texture collages are my way of representing the most evocative images of a place. When you travel, it’s rarely the landmarks and landscapes that you remember; more likely its the ‘feel’ of a place, perhaps the streetfood, fabrics or everyday architecture.
I started making them in 2011 after returning from a trip to Asia and missing the lively colour of it all. My souvenir photos of Asian landmarks and landscapes didn’t emote the true pleasures of the trip, so I found a way to use my images of food, fabrics and rich textures instead. HOW ARE THEY MADE?
If you’ve ever ordered an album of digital prints, you’ll likely have been encouraged to buy a ‘wall collage of your photos’ – it’s easy for a computer programme to knock one up, no bother. These are not those!
All the photography I use is taken purposefully. I look for interesting textures and compile an album. From there, it’s a lengthy process of colour-grading, arranging and fine-tuning. The final pattern is not intended to exactly match a colour wheel. Rather, I try to find a pleasingly ordered yet contrasting layout that invites viewers in.

1) BRIGHTON & HOVE PHOTO TEXTURE COLLAGE
Comprising 186 close ups and details of Brighton and Hove, the Brighton Photo Texture Collage shows the vibrance, variety and colour of this much-loved city. It’s all about the detail. Yes, you’ll find the main landmarks featured – pier, pavilion, lanes and, of course, a few seagulls – but Brighton is a sum of all its wonderful parts. I hope the imagery speaks to you as it does me.
Penny arcades, fish & chips, the famous pebbles; there are 186 images of Brighton and Hove featured in the collage. May I suggest a treasure hunt?
2) MOROCCO PHOTO TEXTURE COLLAGE
Comprising 142 close ups and details of Morocco, the Morocco Texture Photo Collage shows the country’s brilliantly varied landscape and its rich, visual culture. If you’ve visited the country – perhaps Marrakesh, the Sahara or a coastal resort – you’ll recognise the fabrics, foods and ornament that are so distinctively Moroccan.
These photos were taken across the country, from its dusty deserts to luscious valleys and cultured cities.
